ASIA - 7 Week Tour - Jan 17 to March 5, 2011

VIETNAM

I arrived at midnight to a quiet, calm Hanoi and awakened the next morning to chaos. Streets overrun with motorbikes (which made crossing the street a death defying act), the never ending sound of horns plucking at every nerve and merchants demanding your attention every 5 seconds as you maneuver your way through the cluttered sidewalks.

It was day one of my 7 week tour throughout SE Asia and 9 strangers were about to enter my life, 6 of whom would be there for the next 47 days....Russ (our tour leader), Kelly, Kym, John, Dotty and Sharna. Three others...Mary, Trish and James travelled with us for a short time, making the total 10 including me. Several new faces would come and go during the remainder of our tour adding to the memories of our adventure.

Four hours outside the hustle and bustle of Hanoi, we enjoyed a serene 2 days floating amongst the towering limestone islands that rise from Halong Bay. Twenty million years in the making, these monolithic towers took our breath away. One in particular, Bo Hon Island, was home to an enormous cave called Sung Sot Cave. We climbed 50 stone steps and inside we found a cavern large enough to hold thousands of people. We spent over an hour wandering amongst the many tourists enjoying the beauty of this caves stalagmites and stalactites hanging from the ceiling.

It was a wonderful two days as we drifted along enjoying beautiful scenery, delicious meals and the company of 9 people who were quickly becoming friends as we laughed the evening away during a charades game John and Kym introduced us to.

My First 6 Months on the Road

Hi Everyone! I've completed the first half of my Around the World journey and below you will find some pictures to go along with the tales of my adventure. I had an amazing 6 months and saw many beautiful sights and met some great people along the way and as an added bonus, I lost 32 pounds and two clothing sizes! All in all, I visited 65 cities in 13 countries!

I spent 178 days on the road:

- 40 days on 3 tours (Morocco, Egypt and Turkey)

- 21 days travelling with my friend Philip and his son Tristan (Greece and Italy)

- and 117 days travelling on my own!

I left Calgary on February 27, 2010 and returned to Canada on August 24, 2010, just days short of 6 months on the road. I'm currently spending time with my father in Trenton Ontario but will return to Calgary the first week of October. I can't wait to see everyone! By the time I get home, I will have been away just over 7 months. I hope my puppies remember me!

Day 166 - 178 August 12 - 24, 2010 UK

Today I left Rome and flew to UK's Manchester airport. I spent the next 12 days visiting friends I made during my travels. On the 24th I boarded a flight to Toronto, ending my first 6 months on the road overseas.

Day 165 - August 11, 2010 Rome

Last night around 11, we drove to Rome and this morning Philip and his son left the hotel around 5 am to return the rental car before they boarded their flight to Londons Gatwick Airport.

I spend one more night here as my flight to Manchester UK isn't until tomorrow.

Day 164 - August 10, 2010 - Florence Italy

I had already been to Florence so I stayed in bed for the morning while Philip and his son Tristan toured around the city. Yesterday had been such a long day that I just needed some rest.

Once they were done, they came and got me and we went for a long long drive around the countryside of Florence. We spent a bit of time trying to find this castle we saw on the drive in the night before, but weren't successful. We did follow another sign pointing to a castle and drove up the driveway, wandered around a bit before going to the door. It was locked so we went back to the car only to hear "May I help you". Someone's head was poking out of an upstairs window and we asked if the castle was open. His answer? "This is a private residence." Wow...must be nice!

We continued on our drive of the countryside. It was quite pretty and I was so enamoured with everything I completely forgot to take my camera out of my purse to snap some pics.

Later in the day we had some supper and then wandered around the city again for an hour or so so I could take some pics. I didn't see much of Florence this time, but that was okay. I had been there before. Here I am, the one in the brown shorts and white top, in front of the Cathedral, il Duomo.
This is my last pic of my 6 months on the road. Me standing on a sewer cover with the city name: Firenze (Florence)

Day 163 Evening - August 9, 2010 - Pisa Italy

We arrived in Pisa and immediately went to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Basilca next to it. I will admit I was quite underwhelmed with the tower. It was SHORT. I guess I had it in my mind that it was much taller. I remember seeing it from a distance back in 2008 and it looked much taller at that time. Still, it was interesting to see it and we got silly like all the other tourists andtook those typical pictures where you hold your hand up as if to stop it from toppling over.

I thought the Basilica was quite beautiful and once the day was over we went back to the car, but not before stopping and buying a couple of fake Prada purses!

The sun had set and we continued driving to Florence....our next stop. We arrived late and we had a very difficult time finding the hotel. The streets were mostly in one direction and a lot of them were for pedestrians. After an hour or so we finally figured out a way to get there. It was 1 am and when we arrived we were told they had to move us to another hotel. So we had to find that one. Thankfully it wasn't too far away but it was a late night and tomorrow was the only day we had to see Florence.

It's was a long day...we started our day touring the Cinque Terre Coast, then spent the evening in Pisa and then drove to Florence. We accomplished quite a bit in such a short time!!

I'm tired....goodnight!

Day 162 - 163 August 8 - 9, 2010 Cinque Terre Coast, Italy

We thought of going to see Monte Carlo but time issues changed our minds and we ended up in La Spezia.

Our plan was to drive along the Cinque Terre coast the first day and see if we could find anything interesting and then the next day take a ferry along the coast and stop in various towns.

We did a bit of touring in the rental car until we came upon a little town called Vernazza. We parked the car and walked down a long road towards the coast. We stopped at a restaurant half way through the walk and enjoyed a lovely meal before moving on to the town. It was exactly what I had imagined!

The town was filled with colourful houses in smoky pinks, oranges, yellow and peach. Just beautiful! We spent quite a bit of time wandering through the pretty town.

Today, the 9th, we drove to Portovenere where we caught a ferry and spent the day along the Cinque Terre coastline. I had seen pictures of this place and it was just as beautiful in person. Here are some pics from the various towns along the coast.

Corniglia Italy

Riomaggiore Italy

Portovenere

Monterosso Italy
Manarola ItalyOnce we returned to Portovenere, we left for Pisa and spent the evening there.

Day 160 - 161 August 6 - 7, 2010 Venice Italy

Today, the 6th, we drove North to Venice. We spent quite a bit of time finding a hotel and in the end found one about 20 minutes outside of Venice. We booked a couple of nights there and the next morning, on the 7th, we took a bus into Venice and spent the day touring there.
I've been to Venice before, back in 2007 with my daughter JeNelle, so I knew my way around but also wanted to see something I missed last time. A visit to one of the islands. First we spent time wandering around Venice seeing all the sights.

I took Philip and his son to my favourite shop there where the owner makes custom Venetian masks. I fell in love with one 3 years ago and never bought it because it was quite expensive but I swore if I ever came back I would buy one and I did! It's absolutely stunning...way out of my budget but I'm sure I will enjoy seeing it hang on my wall for years to come.

We wandered around Venice for hours visiting various churches and St. Marks square where we found a woman holding food to attract the pidgeons. It worked! She was covered in them!

We also visited St. Marks Basilica which was very beautiful on the outside as well as the inside.
In the afternoon we boarded a ferry and made our way to Murano too see some glass making factories. Turns out they aren't open in the summer. Most of the glass making is done in the winter during the low season to sell in the high season of summer.

We wandered around the pretty island and checked out the sights and some of the stories that sell the beautiful glass objects for sale. I was stunned by the prices....$700 for a small bowl! Too much for me!
All in all we had a great day in Venice and tomorrow we leave for the next town on our Italian Adventure.

Day 158 - 159 August 4 - 5, 2010 Amalfi Coast Italy

Today we went to the main train station in Rome and visited over 10 car rental places before we found one that actually had a car available to rent. We picked the smallest and the cheapest but there was no room for all of our luggage so had to move up to the next size which still was quite a tight fit for all 3 suitcases but we managed to make it work.

We decided to head to the Amalfi Coast and drove South for a few hours before arriving there. It's such a beautiful place and we drove through some of the small towns before arriving in Sorrento where we had a late dinner and tried to figure out where we should stay for the night. After a couple of stops, we found a hotel with an available room. It was 10 at night and we were lucky to actually found one during the height of their season. This is what happens when you don't plan out your trip but I love not knowing what I'm doing from one day to the next but wasn't so sure Philip and Tristan liked travelling this way. It might be stressful to the average person.

Today, the 5th, we drove around the Amalfi Coast visiting such towns as Portofino, Amalfi and Ravello. I just love this coastline with all the homes built up on the sides of the mountain.

We stopped and took pictures of the beautiful scenery before deciding to follow a tourist bus and see where it takes us. Well, it took us up a mountain and across it and down it to the other side. What a beautiful drive. I felt like I was in some lush tropical forest. It was so green and so lush and beautiful.
We turned around and drove back and made our way to Salerno but didn't stop because it was just another big city by the looks of it so we continued our drive east to the other side of Italy.

Later in the evening we found a hotel in Termoli and spent the night there. The room was massive! Actually they gave us an apartment for the same price of a room. I think it was almost as big as my townhouse was!

Day 155 - 157 August 1 - 3, 2010

I was in Rome with my daughter JeNelle back in the summer of 2007 and we spent 4 long days exploring this great city. I was looking forward to showing Philip and his son Tristan all the great sights to see. We found a very pretty hotel just down the street from the Vatican so this was our first stop. We only visited the outside for today. It was a nice, hot sunny day and the guys were in awe of how beautiful it was.

At one point I stopped a nun and asked if she would mind having her picture taken with us and she was more than happy to oblige.

Next we wandered towards the Pantheon but stopped in a few churches on the way. One in particular was quite beautiful....the San Luigi des Francesi. Absolutley stunning church!

Our next stop was Trevi Fountain which is such a beautiful sight to see. It's a popular place and filled with lots of tourists but I managed to get some good photos despite that.

We moved forward and found ourselves at the Pantheon.
It really doesn't look like much from the outside, except maybe the columns, and I'm sure Philip and his son Tristan were wondering why I was making a big deal of the place....but once you enter the Pantheon it takes your breath away. It's quite an architectural feat, considering it was built 2000 years ago, long before modern machinery.

After a long visit there I had another place in mind that I knew would blow Philip away. I checked the map and made sure to take him to an area where once he turned a corner, it would be in full view. I still remember the first time I saw it. It was breathtaking and I knew he would be taken aback by it also. We turned that corner and I'm sure I heard him gasp at it's beauty. We spend some time there checking it out. A lot of it was closed to the public but we still enjoyed it just the same. The pic just doesn't do it justice, in person it's quite beautiful. Here I am with one of the guards.

Our last stop of the day was a place both Philip and his son Tristan had been waiting to see. I was saving the best for last. The Colliseum! Even though I have seen it before, I was still in awe of it. We spent quite a bit of time exploring the area and taking lots of pictures.

Our day ended with a nice dinner at a family owned restaurant and Phiilip and Tristan got a kick out of how the Italian owners communicated. Loudly! You'd swear they were constantly arguing but I think it's just they way they talk. Loudly and aggressively!

Today, the 3rd, we spent more time visiting Rome. I had already been to the interior of the Vatican and just didn't feel like it today so I slept in while Philip and his son spent the morning touring the Vatican. When they returned we took a bus to go visit the catacombs at St. Agnes church. It was a long way out but an interesting trip. At one time there were 5000 people buried under this church and we paid to take a tour of this. The catacombs were quite interesting but we weren't allowed to take pictures and of course I did. I just can't visit a place and not take pictures. I managed to sneak a couple in but because it was very poorly lit, only one turned out halfway decent. We then spent some time in the church above and on the grounds before returning to our hotel.

We had decided at one point we wanted to visit Croatia during this trip but after hours on my laptop, I was unable to find anywhere in Croatia to stay for our 5 days there. It was booked solid and only the most expensive places were available.

In the end I suggested we rent a car and drive around Italy seeing some of the more populare places to visit and the two of them agreed it was the thing to do. Tomorrow we will rent a car for a week and see more of this great country.

Day 154 - July 31, 2010 Athens Greece

I didn't really want to spend much time in Athens as I had been there before and the best sights to see can be seen in one whole day, which we managed to do. We definitely saw a lot!

We left the hotel early in the morning to make our way to the Acropolis.
Along the way we stopped to visit many ruins and a couple of churches before arriving at the base of the area where Acropolis is. It was quite a hike and quite a bit of work to find it as we came in from a different angle than I did last time I was here, so I wasn't exactly sure where we were going. Eventually we made it the the stairs which take us up to the Acropolis. It was another hot day, just like all the days have been during our visit to Greece and I think it was especially hot in the Acropolis. I'm guessing it hit 40 degrees up there. We spent a lot of time wandering the area and taking in its beauty. At one point the heat was getting to me and I took shelter in some shade I found. My face was beat red and I'm sure if I had of stayed in the sun much longer, heat stroke would have started to set in. After a needed rest in the shade, and a lot of liquids, I was ready to get back to my touring the site.

Once we were done, we continued on and found a lot more ruins to visit. We visited Temple of Zeus which took 700 years to complete. There were only 14 of the 104 columns left but it was still nice to see.

Next we took a stroll through the Agora and on our way up to a temple we took a pic with the beautiful Acropolis in the background.

Next was the Temple of Hephaestus at the Agora. Earlier in the day, Philips son Tristan purchased a souvineer which was a replica of an ancient greek helmut with the plume. When we reached the Temple of Hepaestus we pulled it out and put it on Tristan, thinking it would be a great idea to get a picture of him next to the temple with the helmut on. It turns out this wasn't such a great idea, at least not to the female guard who came running to us, waving her hands and telling us we are NOT ALLOWED to put on the helmut and take pictures. Since I'm not one for following rules, (hence all the photos I took inside castles when I wasn't allowed to) we just snuck around to the other side and quickly took some pics while she wasn't looking.

After much wandering in the excessive heat all day, it was time to return to the hotel. We were tired and hungry and had an early flight the next day to Rome.
